From 1989 to 1990 Ivan Kovač was employed as a quarry manager at a construction company „Niskogradnja“, Pregrada. Since1990 he has been employed at the Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering, University of Zagreb. From the beginning of the academic year 2011/2012 till the end of the academic year 2014/2015 he was the vice-dean for teaching. From 1st April 2017 till 30th September 2018 he was the head of the Department of Environmental Engineering. He was elected Associate Professor in 2019.

His field of scientific work is related to modelling in mining and environmental engineering, monitoring of groundwater quality and the application of statistical and geostatistical methods.
