Geotechnical Laboratoty

Category: Geotehnika

The Geotechnical Laboratory is part of the Department of Geotechnics. It was founded in 1974 and since then it has been involved in the teaching process through performing laboratory exercises. The teaching activity became intensified after the Bologna model had been introduced in the undergraduate and graduate study programme in Environmental Engineering. Obligatory practical exercises from the courses in Geotechnical Practicum I and II are performed in the Laboratory and demonstrative exercises are sometimes performed as part of the courses in Soil Mechanics and Applied Statistics.

The Geotechnical Laboratory was completely renewed, extended and modernized in 2006. It was accredited by the Croatian Accreditation Agency (CAA) under number 1476 as a laboratory for geomechanical soil testing . At the end of 2019, the accreditation expired and the Laboratory is currently in the reaccreditation process. The Laboratory consists of modern, sophisticated equipment which enables the performance of more than 20 types of soil testing according to standard or special procedures. Some parts of special equipment are used for scientific research in the area of soil mechanics. The Laboratory has participated in Croatian scientific projects concerning the design and development of a unique device which is used for testing the deformability of municipal solid waste. Reliable laboratory testing results have ensured an intensive cooperation of the Laboratory with companies that deal with geotechnical engineering and environmental protection.
